Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman 3.5/5

Ah, a story about magic and sisterhood.

The Owens women were always blamed for anything that went wrong in town. But they also were called upon for special requests such as getting a married man to love them back. The younger Owens girls, Sally and Gillian, were being raised by their aunts who didn’t have any rules. They didn’t care if they went to school, stayed up all night and ate chocolate for every meal.

Sally and Gillian were very different – Sally was guarded and responsible, always trying to cook healthy meals for them. Gillian was lazy and fell in love easily, usually with the wrong men. This is evident when she shows up at Sally’s door several years later, needing help with her lover, Jimmy.

Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies so this was a must read for me. It’s also what inspired my daughters middle name, Antonia. Usually the book is much better than the movie but in this case, I did prefer the movie. 3.5/5
