Mia Dennett goes missing before her 25th birthday and Detective Gabe Hoffman is put on the case. Mia and her family hadn’t been close for years. But her mother, Eve, is understandably distraught. Her father couldn’t be bothered. He thought Mia just took off. She’d done this before in high school.
We find out Colin Thatcher was hired to kidnap Mia for ransom money. His job is to hand her over to a man named Dalmar. At the last moment, he changes his mind. He takes her to his estranged father’s deserted cabin in the woods. He’s afraid of what Dalmar and his men will do to her before getting their money. He is even more afraid of what they will do if they don’t get the money. Colin didn’t consider that they are now alone in this isolated cabin. There is no food and no heat. Also, winter is coming.
The chapters alternate between “before” and “after” and also from different points of view – Hoffman, Eve, and Colin.
I didn’t care for the unnecessary romantic entanglement between Eve (Mia’s mom) and Detective Hoffman. I didn’t love this book. In the end, it all seemed like a lot for no real reason. This was my least favorite Mary Kubica book so far. 2/5
