The Women by Kristin Hannah 5/5

Frances “Frankie” McGrath grew up in the navy town of Coronado, California. In this town, soldiers are revered and honored for their service. Her own father has a wall of heroes in his office. When Frankie’s older brother Finn goes off to Vietnam, she decides to follow him as a nurse. The Navy won’t send her out right away so she goes as an Army nurse.

Frankie is in for a rude awakening when she gets dropped in Vietnam but she learns quickly. She makes connections with her fellow nurses, surgeons, and soldiers alike. The losses she endures are heartbreaking but she finds how resilient she is.

After two grueling tours, her homecoming is less than ideal since everyone is now protesting the war. No one believes she was even in the war – everyone says, “women weren’t in Vietnam.” No one believes she was a hero, which is crazy. After years of trying to find her way back home, she finally finds some peace in the end.

Kristin Hannah’s books are amazing and I really feel for these characters.
