Beth has been taking care of her mom, who is dying of cancer. She’s pissed because her siblings haven’t been to visit, even when their mom was on her death bed. Sister Nicole is a struggling drug addict and brother Michael is successful in the tech world. Beth resents them both. Their dad disappeared 7 years ago. When mom Laura speaks her last words to Beth, she is left with more questions than ever. She basically says that her father didn’t disappear and not to trust *someone/something*. Why, oh why, did she choose her dying breath to give her daughter this ominous information?
Beth had been sending emails to her dad just in case he ever responded. When Laura dies, Beth sends a email to her dad, hoping he will reach out. When he does respond, the kids are shocked and filled with renewed hope. All except Beth, who doesn’t want to get her hopes up. Michael tracks the IP address and he and Nicole drive an hour away but no one is there.
The siblings are going through old VHS tapes. They come across one that was clearly not meant to be recorded. It’s their parents coming upon the dead body of a girl named Emma Harper. The kids remember her being missing and never found. They have to decide on whether to keep their parents secret or give The Harper’s some closure.
I typically can’t predict what’s going to happen in a thriller. Nor do I want to because I want to enjoy the surprise. But this book was a teensy bit predictable even for me. But it was still very good. And I do love author Jeneva Rose. 5/5
