Hatchet book by Gary Paulsen

13 year old Brian is taking a private jet to Canada to visit his dad. When the pilot has a heart attack (and there’s no co-pilot), the plane goes down. It crashes into a lake in the Boreal forest. Brian is left only with the hatchet his mom gave him.

He’s forced to survive in the wilderness all by himself with only his hatchet. He has to find food and fend off wild animals.

Coco read this in school and I’m not exaggerating when I say she talked about it every single day. She was so sad when the book ended but she can’t wait to read the rest in the series. We are also planning to watch the movie that is based on the book, called A Cry in the Wild.

I thought the title and book cover was scary. I’m confused why a mom gave her son a hatchet. And also why Brian’s parents would send him on a flight all by himself at age 13. Coco says she loved it but it was a little scary and graphic.
