Alex Cormier is a public defender who finds herself pregnant and alone. She attends a childbirth class led by nurse midwife Lacy Houghton. They become fast friends, raising their children together. Their kids Josie and Peter are attached at the hip, even starting Kindergarten together. Peter immediately becomes the target of severe bullying. Josie sticks up for him as young kids until she wants to become part of the popular crowd. Then she just lets it happen.
Years later, Peter walks into Sterling High School, and starts shooting. He aims for the jocks who bullied him all his life. Josie gets hurt, but she survives. Her boyfriend Matt unfortunately is one of the 10 people killed. Numerous others are hurt. Alex is now a Superior Court judge and is meant to be residing over Peter’s case.
This book was SUPER heavy. I even contemplated not posting my review but I hate unfinished things. Ultimately I thought it was a good book, very thought provoking, and sad. The subject matter was a bit much for me.
3.5/5
