Every Memorial Day weekend, a block party takes place on Alton Road in fictional Meadowbrook, Massachusetts. Already, I’m into it because it’s in Massachusetts.
At the present day block party, someone is killed. We have no idea who or how it went down. We rewind to a year prior and see all the events of the year leading up to the death. The families of Alton Road (nicknamed The Altonites) certainly have some secrets, especially from each other.
Our main character Alexandra Fox is an in denial alcoholic who always has her nose is everyone’s business. She says people confide in her but she could probably do more to gossip less. Teenage daughter Lettie is obsessed with the bad boy who just moved onto Alton Road.
At its core, this is a story about revenge. Some acts of revenge understandable and some very childish. I didn’t love any of the characters and didn’t love the book. It had such a good premise too so I was bummed.
