In rural North Carolina, 2 high school seniors go missing after a beach party. 2 weeks later, one of them is found after escaping. The other is still missing.
Megan McDonald was the girl who escaped and a year later, she’s on a book tour. The other missing girl was Nicole Cutty. Nicole’s older sister Livia is now a forensic pathology fellow, studying to be a Medical Examiner. She’s always hoping a Jane Doe that gets brought in will be Nicole.
A body does come in after being found in the water. She finds out it’s the man who used to date Nicole before her disappearance. She starts investigating on her own, even reaching out to Megan for help.
Throughout the book, I really had some working theories on who the abductor was. But alas, I was wrong multiple times.
I think Megan’s character development could have been better. There were lots of details of graphic autopsies. I felt like I was studying for med school. This was the first book I’ve read from Charlie Donlea and I will be adding more to my list!
5/5
