Grace Pancik and Madeline King are best friends. Madeline is a writer searching for inspiration for her sophomore novel. She’s looking for a follow up to her successful debut, Islandia.

Grace is the wife of Eddie Pancik or “Fast Eddie,” a real estate agent in town. She sells organic eggs and gives a lot of attention to her home garden. When renowned landscape architect Benton Coe returns, Grace is so excited to work with him. She’s so outwardly flirty with him, it’s like she wants to get caught. Benton and Grace start an affair.

Madeline warns her it will end badly, obviously. Grace doesn’t heed her warning. Rumors swirl around Nantucket. The game of telephone gets the story completely mixed up. It doesn’t help that Madeline uses Grace and Benton’s elicit affair as fodder for her new book.

Normally, Elin Hilderbrand’s book are 5/5 hands down. This one didn’t quite land for me. A lot of the book was hard to believe and felt totally unrealistic, especially Eddie Pancik’s side business.
