The Only One Left by Riley Sager

We all know the rhyme about Lizzie Borden :

“Lizzie Borden took an axe,

And gave her mother forty whacks.

When she saw what she had done,

She gave her father forty-one.”

Well, in Maine, Lenora Hope has a similar rhyme made up about her:

“At seventeen, Lenora Hope hung her sister with a rope.

Stabbed her father with a knife.

Took her mother’s happy life.”

Lenora says she didn’t do it but of course she was *the only one left.” So who else could it have been? Well, welcome to the best whodunit I’ve read it quite a while. And I needed this book after a few duds.

31 year old Kit McDeere is a caregiver fresh off an unpaid 6 month suspension. We don’t know exactly why at first but we gather someone was hurt on her watch. For her first job back, she’s sent to care for Lenora Hope. She’s now in her 70’s, confined to a wheelchair and doesn’t speak. Kit is terrified but desperate to make some money. When Kit starts, she realizes that Lenora wants to share her story. She can type (very slowly) but she can do it. She tells Kit piece by piece but she is still adamant she didn’t kill anyone.

Kit starts hearing footsteps in Lenora’s room but when she checks, nothing is amiss. She starts to think the house may be haunted by sister Virginia’s ghost.

Put this at the top of your TBR pile!! I’ve never taken more notes on a book because *twist whiplash.*
