Middle of the Night by Riley Sager

Ok I had started reading 3 separate books but couldn’t get into ANY of them. When I started reading this book, I devoured it.

The story alternates between the night of July 15 (my birthday yay) and current day – 30 years apart. In July 1994, 10 year old Ethan Marsh and Billy Barringer camp out in Ethan’s backyard in a tent. Just like they do every week in the summer. Ethan wakes up he sees a slit cut into the tent and Billy is gone. 30 years later and he’s still never been found.

Understandably, Ethan struggles with survivors guilt. Not to mention the fact that he can’t remember anything from the night in question. He won’t have kids of his own since he’s terrified of something bad happening (I get this 100%). And he has nightmares so often he’s referred to them as The Dream. He writes down when he has them just in case there’s new information that could be helpful. Usually there’s not.

Ethan moves back to his parents house on Hemlock Circle, where the disappearance took place. Weird things start happening. There are shadows and a baseball in his yard. This is Billy’s old calling card saying he wants to play.

Billy’s remains are found just about on the 30 year anniversary of his disappearance. This discovery makes Ethan more determined than ever to find his killer.

I read this book pretty quickly – super easy read, great writing style. I thought the book would go one way and it didn’t. Every time I thought I knew who the killer was, I was surprised to learn I was wrong.
