In 1985, Seattle PD’s Edward Shank arrests “The Butcher” Rufus Wedge. From there, he becomes a local legend referred to as simply “Chief.” About 30 years later, he’s off to an active retirement community. He sells his family home to grandson Matthew, the most unlikable character I’ve read in awhile.
Matt’s loving girlfriend, Sam, writes true crime books but this particular case piques her interest more than others. She has a personal connection to The Butcher. She believes that he killed her mother when she was just a baby.
While a construction crew is digging behind Matt’s house to put in a deck, they uncover a locked crate. When Matt breaks into it, his whole life is turned upside down.
I almost stopped reading in the beginning because of the graphic scenes. The book was interesting with some twists. Some predictable, others not as much so. If it weren’t for the gore and just basically all around “ick” factor, it would’ve been rated a 5/5. But for me, it’s a 3/5.
3/5
