Anna Andrews is a fill in news anchor who left home at 16 years old and drinks far too much. She’s been at the BBC for 20 years, starting at the bottom, which I can respect. When her predecessor, Cat Jones, comes back from maternity leave after 2 years, Anna is back to the correspondent desk. Oh, but she can still fill in on holidays and when Cat’s kids are sick, lucky her.
Detective Chief Inspector Jack Harper lives in a sleepy village near Surrey, called Blackdown. A Jane Doe is found which naturally shocks their quiet town. Her nails read, “Two Faced.” We find out Jack was with the woman the night before and evidence ends up in his car. Someone appears to be setting him up.
Anna comes back to Blackdown where she’s from to investigate. More bodies show up with a similar MO and they all went to high school with Anna. Is she next? Anna and Jack used to be married also. This didn’t even feel super important to the story besides the fact that Jack wants to protect her.
I only read this because I was seeing it everywhere. I wanted to read it before watching the Netflix series. The book wasn’t anything special. In the end, it was just stupid. I don’t want to give the ending away but it seemed extreme for this person to do. The only victim is this book was Cat Jones. I started the series and couldn’t watch more than 1.5 episodes. The actors portraying Jack and Anna are terrible. I didn’t get the hype on the book or the series.
