Laura Morris volunteers at a suicide call center called End of the Line. She says the volunteers aren’t there to talk anyone out of suicide but to be there just to listen. You would think Laura – a mother of 3, loving wife, caring volunteer – would be *A Good Samaritan.* But you would be wrong.
She gets a thrill from hearing peoples last breaths *cringe.* She convinces some “candidates” to kill themselves while on the phone with her. Sick sick sick. One “candidate” asks her to be there in person with him. She decides that might be even better than over the phone. For her, not him. She’s always only thinking about herself.
We read about flashbacks from Laura’s childhood and I feel bad for her. Particularly her foster home situation was pretty awful. But she has got to be the worst human I’ve ever read. She’s psychotic scum out to ruin everyone’s lives.
The premise was interesting. All in all the book was very good. I loathed the character of Laura, which I suppose was probably the point.
Trigger warning: suicide. My god, there’s a lot of it in this book.
