I had to re-read the book before seeing the movie. I was reminded how I wanted to shut the book after the first few sentences. The man ran over by a car still haunts me. Lowen gets bloody from being too close to the accident and Jeremy helps her get cleaned up.

A few minutes later they find themselves at the same meeting. Lowen is a writer and Jeremy’s wife Verity is also a writer. Verity is incapacitated after being in an accident and can’t finish the remaining 3 books in her series. They’re looking for another writer to finish them. Insert Lowen. For some reason, Jeremy thinks it’s best for Lowen to come live in their family home to make sense of Verity’s notes. God forbid he just box them up and bring them to her.

Lowen starts reading Verity’s published books, her notes and even finds what appears to be Verity’s autobiography. In it, she reads how obsessed Verity was with Jeremy. She reads spine chilling admission after spine chilling admission. Verity believes her and Jeremy are “Chronics,” people prone to chronic tragedy. They lost 2 of their children. The only remaining child is son Crew who is 5 years old.

In the end, you’re left wondering what’s real and what isn’t.

There are so many times Jeremy and Lowen cross lines that it makes me want to scream. Chapters alternate between Verity’s autobiography and the present. All in all, a very suspenseful, enjoyable book. Nothing like Colleen Hoover’s other books but in my opinion, her best.
