Writer Mari Morgan is struggling to write her next book. Understandably so, considering she lost her husband and son a year ago. We assume they both died in some kind of shooting that is alluded to. She receives an email from Owen Doyle, the head of a production company. Normally she wouldn’t give this email another thought. But after a bit of research she sees it’s legit and hopes this will give her a renewed sense of hope. Maybe one of her projects will be adapted into a movie? Against her better judgement, she meets Owen and his wife at their home. It just so happens they live close by. Naturally, his wife *isn’t available* when she gets there. She accepts a cocktail from him and are we stupid???? You’ll be screaming at the book and at Mari.

Well, as you can imagine, she shouldn’t have opened the email…

His name is not Owen Doyle, he was posing as him to get Mari to the house, which doesn’t belong to him. He holds her hostage. He is in love with her and says he’s her # 1 Fan. He gets all her favorite things to make her “comfortable.” As comfortable as she can be while held captive. Grape candies, peaches, chardonnay, etc. He wants to help her start writing again, supposedly. He re-enacts torture scenes she wrote in her published books. Carving his initials into her leg, burning her with a cigarette, attempting to pull her teeth with pliers (she gets out of that one somehow). *Shiver.*. She tries multiple times to escape, only to be pulled back by “Owen,” and punished.

I won’t giving anything away but the premise of this book is so good. Personally, I haven’t read one like it before. Super quick read and a twist towards the end. I would rate it a 6 out of 5 if I could. Kiersten Modglin is quickly becoming one of my faves and I can’t wait to read more from her.
