“Whatever story you tell yourself about your life, that’s the one that’ll be true.”

Wannabe screenwriter Emma has been a caretaker for her dad for nearly 10 years. She never takes care of herself, solely focusing on her dad and even her little sister Sylvie. When ex boyfriend Logan Scott (who’s now a Hollywood talent manager) calls, he turns her whole world upside down.

Logan wants to bring her to LA to meet with celebrated screenwriter Charlie Yates. Mind you, Emma is completely obsessed with him. Or his writing really, his body of work, his career. Charlie normally handles sci fi or crime thrillers. This screenplay is his first rom-com, which Emma excels at. But when she reads it, she’s horrified at how bad it is.

When she gets to LA she realizes Logan misled her and Charlie not only had no idea she was coming but is quite rude and dismissive. He doesn’t want to work with a “failed screenwriter” and makes that very clear. Kind of a douche. Emma overhears the mean things Charlie says and takes off, pissed at both of them but mainly Logan for lying to her.

Charlie chases her down and takes her back to his mansion. He convinces her to stay the night. When Emma rips his rom-com screenplay to shreds, I assume he appreciates her honestly and wants to hear more from her. They end up working together and becoming shall we say… companionable.

Lately, all I’ve read are mysteries and psychological thrillers. So this was a nice change of pace. A friend recommended it and I was a bit skeptical.

Negatives: There’s no way a famous screenwriter would let a stranger, writer or not, stay at his house overnight. I kept forgetting our heroines name because it was mentioned so infrequently. It’s Emma just in case you also forgot. Now onto the positives : beautiful colorful book cover that catches your eye, super badass main character Emma who is probably one of the most lovable characters I’ve ever read. It was funny and easy to read. Also an amazing semi-realistic love story, and of course aw-shucks Charlie.
