FBI Special Agent Victor Hanoverian is interviewing a young girl who has been named Maya by a man known as The Gardener. Maya, along with almost 25 other young girls were just rescued from a place known was The Garden. Basically, The Gardener kidnaps young girls around age 16. He tattoos their entire backs with a butterfly of his choosing and sometimes their faces almost like a face mask you’d wear to a Masquerade ball. He brushes their hair which is super creepy.

He also rapes these young girls, lets his fucked up son Avery rape and maim them, and then once they hit the ripe bold age of 21, he kills them. He embalms them while they’re drugged and preserves them in resin and glass. Then he displays them. For the other girls to see what their fate has in store for them. I mean this guy is really messed up.

The girls or the “butterflies” form a bond like family. Thank god they have each other.

Sections of the book alternate between Maya being questioned by FBI and her past either at The Garden or her time before being kidnapped in NYC when her name was Inara Morrissey. Or so her fake ID says. I thought it was a bit crazy that all these girls just seemed resigned to their fates and barely tried to escape. 25 girls couldn’t overpower one man? There’s a second book in the series which I plan to read as well!
